An original colour woodblock print of rare intimacy. Desert rock surface rendered as pure abstraction, warm ochres and pale lavenders interlocking across the entire composition in a mosaic of extraordinary depth.

Desert Evening invites no easy interpretation. What might be geological, the layered surface of desert rock seen impossibly close, dissolves under attention into something closer to pure colour field painting. Pale lavender and cream push against warm ochre and olive. The organic shapes flow and interlock with no fixed centre and no obvious point of entry.
The woodblock technique suits this subject well. Each colour is carved and printed separately. The physical layering of inks builds a surface richness that mirrors the geological layering of the rock itself. The result is a print that rewards sustained looking, revealing new colour relationships and new passages of texture the longer it is examined.
Titled and dated 1980 in the lower margin, this is impression number 2 from an edition of just 31, among the rarest works in the West23 collection.
