On January 20th 2009, Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States, the first African American to hold the office. Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the iconic HOPE poster that defined Obama’s campaign, was commissioned directly by Obama’s campaign office to create a commemorative inauguration print.
Be The Change is that print. Bold, graphic, and unmistakably Fairey’s hand. Obama flanked by the Capitol building and the White House, the inauguration seal at the centre, the crowd below. Red, white and blue deployed with the precision of a designer and the conviction of a true believer. The work was produced in collaboration with MoveOn.org, with proceeds supporting civic engagement.
An example of this print is held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. This is a hand-numbered impression from the original 2009 limited edition of 10,000, one of the most historically significant American prints of the 21st century.
