The Driver is an entirely different register from Igor Kovalyov’s more meditative figurative works. That contrast is precisely what makes it compelling. Where Grandmother moves slowly and quietly, The Driver explodes into the frame with energy and movement. A truck cab fills the composition, the vehicle number 663 stencilled on its side. The driver is caught mid-gesture, a figure in motion, in the middle of something we will never quite see the beginning or end of.
Kovalyov works in deep burgundy and black against a pale ground, the marks loose and expressive — more drawing than print in its immediate energy.
