Shiro Kasamatsu was one of the defining voices of the shin-hanga movement, a 20th century Japanese printmaking revival that brought Western ideas of individual artistic expression into the ancient woodblock tradition. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Legion of Honor San Francisco.

Pagoda in Evening Rain is widely regarded as one of his masterworks. The five-storey Yanaka Pagoda in Tokyo dominates the composition, dark and monumental against a rain-soaked blue sky. Below, a lone figure in kimono shelters beneath a brilliant red umbrella, the single point of warm colour in an otherwise cool and atmospheric scene.

The title and location are confirmed in the original Japanese margin inscription on the print itself: 雨に暮るゝ塔 (Pagoda in Evening Rain), 〔東京谷中〕 (Yanaka, Tokyo). This detail speaks to the authenticity and integrity of this impression. A work of genuine rarity and museum quality.
