Village in the Hills is not a place you visit. It is a place you remember. M. Fandrup works in the European Expressionist tradition, where the goal is never literal description but emotional truth. The red-roofed cottages push forward from the deep verdant darkness of the hillside behind them, their pale walls catching a light that has no obvious source. The dark vignette presses in from every edge, giving the scene the quality of a memory surfacing from the edges of sleep.

The pastel medium suits this subject well. Fandrup’s marks are loose and energetic, strokes building atmosphere rather than detail, colour layered over colour until the surface carries a richness that rewards close examination. Green and deep blue press against warm ochre and terracotta. The contrast creates a visual warmth that the dark surround only intensifies.

This is an original unique artwork, not a print, not an edition. Signed and dated by the artist in 1989, there is only one of this work in existence.
